Tbilisi is a cosmopolitan city steeped in history, architecture, religion, modernism, lively places, gastronomy, etc….
To get to know this fascinating city better, book a professional English-speaking guide to take you on a half- or full-day tour of the city based on your preferred themes.
Departure from your accommodation.
We’ll visit the historic center of Tbilisi, located in the old town. Stroll through the narrow cobbled streets and admire the traditional Georgian architecture.
You will visit the Sioni church, the synagogue and the Jumah mosque, these 3 religious edifices being located in perfect harmony close by.
Visit to the Georgian National Museum. This museum brings together several of Georgia’s major museums, enabling you to learn more about the country’s culture and history. Visit the Anchiskhatide Basilica of St. Mary, the oldest church in Tbilisi (6th century). It was built by King Dachi of Iberia, who made Tbilisi his capital. Visit the Church of St. George of Kashveti, an Orthodox church belonging to the Georgian Patriarchate, in the age-old architectural style of eastern Georgia. Lunch in Tbilisi’s old town. Afternoon: Visit to the Tbilisi Museum of Ethnography. It is named after Giorgi Chitaia (Georgian ethnographer). Founded on April 27, 1966, the Museum displays examples of folk architecture and handicrafts from different regions of the country. From here, you’re very close to Turtle Lake (Georgian Kus TBA), named after the many turtles that used to live here. This lake is frequented by Tbilisians at weekends, and many concerts and festivals are held here. Then on to the National Manuscript Center of Georgia, where ancient manuscripts, incunabula, rare editions, historical documents and private archives of personalities are preserved. Visit to the Georgian Museum (theater, music, film and choreography). The museum is housed in one of Tbilisi’s most spectacular buildings. It was designed by a well-known architect of the time, Paul Stern, and is a perfect example of a Gothic blend with Islamic architecture. 7h30
You’ll visit the “Dry Bridge” open-air market not far from the old town. This market is famous for its second-hand goods, antiques, jewelry, crockery, objets d’art, souvenirs, etc. You can also find some old Soviet relics here.
We’ll have lunch in a traditional Georgian restaurant. You’ll be able to savor tasty Georgian cuisine (Khatchapuri = cheese pancake; khinkali = large ravioli with meat or cheese, or mushrooms; badrijiani = rolled eggplant stuffed with walnut sauce, etc.).
Visit the Museum of Modern Art of Georgia and the Museum of Georgian History. You’ll discover over fifty thousand artefacts. Learn about the history of Georgia from the end of the 4th millennium BC to the present day. The museum houses archaeological, ethnological and archival objects, as well as works of national and applied art, and a rich photo collection.
As well as exhibiting ancient works, the museum also displays contemporary works of art. Exhibitions by Georgian and international artists are not uncommon.
Take the cable car from Riké Square to the Narikhala fortress overlooking Tbilisi. Built in the 4th century by the Persians, this fortress offers a breathtaking view of the city and the river that flows through Tbilisi. From here, you can also admire the huge statue of the “Georgian Mother”, which dominates the city and can be seen from afar.
To round off the day, visit the sulphur baths at the foot of the Narikala fortress. The sulphurous baths have been a popular place of relaxation for the people of Tbilisi for centuries. You can enjoy a massage using the Turkish massage method.
