This one-day tour of the Kartli region will take you from Tbilisi and back. You’ll visit the town of Mtskheta, former capital of Georgia, and its Djvari monastery with its magnificent viewpoint, the troglodyte town of Ouplitsikhere, and Stalin’s birthplace: Gori. We’ll take the opportunity to visit a winery and taste some wine.
Departing from Tbilisi and depending on the time you have available, this outing will be short (one day) and very eventful. From prehistoric and medieval history with Ouplitsikhe, 20th-century history with the Stalin Museum in Gori, early evangelization history with Djvari and Mtskheta, wine-making history with Château Mukhani, … this tour is also paved with superb, breathtaking views. Lots of memories in your cameras and your memories!
We will pick you up at your accommodation in Tbilisi.
We’ll visit the Djvari monastery, overlooking the three branches of the Mtqvari river. This is one of Georgia’s most famous viewpoints.
Mtskheta was the former capital of Georgia before King Vartang decided to move it to Tbilisi. This charming town is built around the thousand-year-old Svetitskhovéli Cathedral on the banks of the Mtqvari River.
The story of St. Nino’s evangelization of Georgia in 337 passes through here.
We’ll visit the world-famous Chateau Mukhani vineyard, where you can taste a variety of wines. Indeed, here you’ll find wines made in qvevri (an ancestral method of vinification in buried terracotta amphorae). You can also taste a number of grape varieties endemic to the region, including Shavkapito and Sapéravi. Finally, for those who prefer original tastes, you can try the semi-sweet red wines of Kindzmarauli or Khvanchkara.
Gori is Stalin’s birthplace. A museum in his memory was created after his death and still exists today. Beyond the polemics surrounding the character. A visit to this museum will immerse you in the history of these infamous figures: Lenin, Trotsky, Beria, Stalin, … from the Bolshevik revolution to the Second World War, meetings with Churchill, Roosevelt, Truman to outline the borders and influences of the post-war era.
Ouplitsikhe (or Uplitsikhe) is a troglodyte town with a rich, ancient history that has seen many events over the years. In fact, it was the capital of the Kartli region. Its elevated position made it very easy to defend.
Return to Tbilisi in the evening.
